Protecting ones self when being attacked and the possible consequences of doing so is something that is usually not considered until after the fact. This scenario could well happen to anybody. So what to do? In the heat of being attacked does one have the time to think or just the time to act? Or does one have no time at all? Well here is an example of what could happen.
It is a hypothetical situation that has already actually has happened to some, maybe not exactly in the same way, but in equally dire circumstances. You be the judge. What would you do in the same situation? Would you be prepared to act to save yourself or your family? This really is a case for gun ownership and against any attempt to take our second amendment rights away from us.
It was in the middle of the night and alone in his house except for his dog, the old man slept.
The old man was suddenly awaken from his sleep by his German Shepherd dog barking excitingly and as the sleep from his old brain slowly cleared, he heard what he had hoped never would happen, but had been prepared for such an eventuality. He heard the front door being kicked and the sound of several men throwing their weight against the door. He had been awakened before by an apparent attempt to kick in his door the night that his wife had died and had later reinforced his door. There had been several break ins in the neighborhood previously and he became very security conscious by adding more security lights and security equipment.
In spite of being heavily reinforced by a 2x4 bar across the door and more 2x4 wedges plus a double bolt lock, he could hear that it was being forced violently opened with the sounds of cursing and shouting. He knew that the reinforced door would only give him a few precious seconds as he reached for his 12 gauge pump shot gun and cocked his 9mm pistol, but as he reached for the phone to call for the police he suddenly realized that he would not have time for that, it would all be over before the police arrived, the door was giving in to the force of at least several men, things were happening too fast and he knew that he would have to act instinctively to save his life. He was prepared as the bedroom door was kicked open and a dark shadow stood threatening for a few short seconds trying to orientate his self in the darkness of the bedroom before he raised his weapon to fire into the room. As the shots from the intruder's weapon laced the walls the
old man did not hesitate, as he instinctively rolled off the bed and crouched down for cover, he let go with two blasts in rapid succession with his 12 gauge security shotgun that had been loaded with 00 buckshot and had always been primed and loaded to its 5 shot capacity and ready at his bedside along with his 9mm Beretta pistol. The dark figure fell to the floor. Another dark figure appeared and the old man let go with two more quick shots as he yelled in defiance against this assault and another dark figure groaned and fell to the floor, but not before some wild shots were fired into the bedroom, lucky the shots missed the old man and peppered the wall above and behind him. The German Shepherd was barking constantly and making deep growling noises, but stayed with the old man as if for his protection.
With his adrenalin up he ran to the front door and saw another dark figure was trying to escape from his now uncontrolled anger, but he let go with his remaining shot and the man fell to the ground sprawled half way over the door sill and the outside. The old man was in shock and after some time as he tried to regain his composure, he really didn't remember how long, he finally came to his senses and picked up his phone, dialed 911 for the police, then he sat down and waited for the police to come. His German shepherd stayed close by and kept her deep growling and at the same time shaking badly.
When the police arrived the carnage was everywhere with bullet holes in the wall and door with two bloody bodies in the hall and one still living lying on the concrete outside the front door with his life blood ebbing out of his body. The intruders had weapons that they didn't have much chance of using due to the fast response of the old man. The weapons were later determined to be heavy caliber automatic assault types plus hand guns. The police looked around in amazement and held their guns on the old man and told him to drop his shotgun and raise his hands.
The old man carefully lowered his shotgun to the floor and did as he was told and the police cautiously lowered their weapons. They surveyed the damaged front door hanging precariously by just one hinge and his bedroom door that had been kicked violently opened. The police also examined the gun shots on the bed room wall and just shook their heads in amazement that the old man had survived and had reacted as he did.
The old man slowly sank down into his easy chair and held his head in his hands as he began to realize what had taken place in his house of 40 some years, the house that he had paid for by his hard work over the years, the home where he and his wife of over 50 years had raised three sons and a daughter, his wife now less than a year dead from cancer. The police looked at the old man and gave him a few minutes before they asked him what had happened. The old man looked slowly at the police sergeant and shook his head in now disbelief at what happened and said slowly in short sentences, “It all happened so fast. I just acted out of instinct”. He stopped and stared at the officer. “They had broke in and tried to kill me and I just defended myself as best I could.” He paused and continued, “ The way things are happening in the country I expected some bad things could happen, but I didn't expect that it would happened to me in my own house.” He paused again and shook his head. “But I wanted to be prepared just in case and if it did happen I was going to be ready and defend myself.” The police sergeant said, “Well old man you surely did that!” Then the police sergeant said, “Do you have any experience in weapons?” The old man answered, “Yes I was in the army.”
Then he was asked why had he been so ready for the intruders and he responded that he had a feeling someone would come and try to kill him because of his anti-Obama political website and as he had had some threats before because of his web site and his openly written and out spoken comments about Obama. His car had been vandalized as well as some acts of vandalism to his property which he had reported to the police. He has decals on his vehicles that were patriotic, one decal showing his membership in the American Legion, some showing his Army rank and experience and some critical of Obama as well. He had some Romney/Ryan for president decals on his windows. Yes he was patriotic and sometimes if you are that way you do have to defend your rights whereas other people cower behind the protection of the police which in reality is not protection in the truest sense.
As the side walk in front of his house started filling up with curious neighbors with women in their night gowns and robes, their husbands looking on with intense interest, the little kids hiding behind the mothers looking on with wide eyed curiosity and the parked police cars with their emergency lights flashing, as the old man looked around he finally became aware that all of the two dead and the dying man were black. The police outside were questioning another suspicious man who looked Hispanic.
After the ambulance arrived and the two dead and one wounded were removed the police said, “Old man you have to come down to the station for questioning.” The old man said, “Am I under arrest?” The police sergeant looked at him carefully and said, “Not yet. We will have to thoroughly investigate this before we know what to do with you as for as any charges that may be leveled against you.” Then the police sergeant said, “You’re lucky to be alive. These men were armed and dangerous and they had come to kill you. That seems obvious to me and that's the way my report will read.”
So here is the questions, here is the situation, what would you have done?
The question is, will this old man be punished for defending himself in the face of a deadly attack in his own home in the dead of night or will he be cleared under the law? Did he go too far in running after the third intruder and shooting him or would this be considered in the state of the frenzy of being attacked and the uncontrollable anger at the intruders? This is the question. How far can one go in defending oneself in the face of a violent attack on one’s life, his family or his property? If the old man had not had his weapon and had not responded as he did then he would just have been another victim of the unarmed and the unprepared. What is your opinion?
If the old man had not shot the third man then this would have probably been justifiable in defending his life under the law. Most honest and law abiding citizens would hesitate that few seconds before shooting first and asking questions later and in this way the average citizen is at a distinct disadvantage as the criminal types would probably not hesitate and therefore would likely get the first shot in.
Would the citizen in defending himself against apparently deadly force been justified under the law? That is the legal question is it not? Does every citizen have this right or will it be taken away when our guns are banned in violation of the second amendment? And there has been considerable talk about taking away our guns rights under the US Constitution. We must not allow our rights to guns be removed by any unlawful act in violation of the Constitutional Bill of Rights, the second amendment. Obama is dead set in doing this. He has already used the power of the office to try and ban the ownership of private citizens any semi-automatic hand gun. We must never allow this to happen and resist such unconstitutional acts by all our will power! Of the many heinous attacks on innocent citizens, if there was just one courageous citizen that was armed and responded with determination against the mad man, then a lot of people who were killed or wounded by the shooter(s) would have been saved!
There was a situation where an old woman defended herself in much the same way and had shot and killed one attacker and shot the second man as he was running away from her and she was not charged. These two would be robbers must have been very surprised, thinking they had a soft touch with an old lady living alone. There was also a situation where a well-known business owner shot and killed a crazy man trying to break down his door in the middle of the night and was shot through the door and killed.
There also was the case of an Army veteran just back from the war in Iraq who pursued a robber over two yards and shot and killed him. This veteran who had spent months in combat was charged with man slaughter and sentenced to two years in prison. Was this justice or was it not? Extenuating circumstances do not always apply to the situation it seems.
The business man was charged with man slaughter, but later cleared. So what is the average citizen's right towards self-defense. How far can he go in his defense of his person, his family and his property? Does he have to wait until he is injured or his family is? Does he have to wait until his wife is raped or his daughters? Does he have to wait until his property is stolen? What really are his protection and rights under the law? If he comes home and surprises someone robbing him, what is his rights at the time? Can he use deadly force before the crimes are committed or just take it and do nothing? Or just be another nameless victim on a police blotter? Well don't let this happen, be prepared!
Some people are vehemently opposed to having guns in their house and who never seem to consider that bad things could happen to good people or their loved ones, but it could happen and it has happened and it is still happening! It happens all the time and innocent people are being killed almost every day. So I ask you what is the solution. Is there really a solution? If so you tell me! Well, I have a solution. There is one thing that seems to be the case, that the honest and law abiding citizen always seems to be at a disadvantage to the common criminals. That can be reduced by the proper training and mental attitude as well as training in fire arms and what to do in an emergency.
My solution is for every man and woman to be trained in the use of fire arms. Also that very strict laws against any felon, mentally disturbed person to ever be allowed to own any firearm or any weapon, that all criminals and mentally disturbed be on a list distributed to all law enforcement agencies, schools and all government departments as well as a department that monitors all criminal activity and to be available to all businesses. That no convicted criminal be allowed ever to be near or work in a school of any kind. That no convicted sexual pervert be allowed to work anywhere where there are children within a mile.
All this of course would be hard and difficult and poses some danger in its self, but nothing is without some risk. Does all this sound like too much control over our liberties? Well, I would have to agree, but what is the recourse? The recourse is to live with the age old problem of good versus evil. Do we have to I ask? And no, religion is not the complete answer. I am really sorry to have to say that in such an emergency preying to the intruders is not going to save you. It never has it it never will.
This kind of control would be difficult for the average honest citizen, but tolerable. Of course nothing is perfect and criminals will still have guns, but it will cut down on the odds of the good against the bad. As long as there are bad people, good people need to be armed against them! This also applies to good nations against the bad nations in the world. We must be prepared, all of us against the evil in this world. It is not a paradise and it never will be! So do realize we are living in a dangerous world and be prepared. Unfortunately the paradise is not here and we will have to live with what we got until the good over powers the bad, forever!
